Internship at Mississippi State University

Hello! I’m M2 student Kohei Oshima.

I studied at Mississippi State University (MSU) in the US for 6 weeks as an exchange student. MSU is founded in 1878, so it has a long history. Also, the campus is very large. In the campus, there is an American football stadium, a fitness center, etc. 6 weeks was a short time for me, but I think that I could achieve both research and Mississippi life. I usually worked at the lab from 10:00 to 18:00 on weekdays, and I enjoyed Mississippi acitvities during weekends.

I did an experiment for my research. The optical device on the picture is called “Haploscope”. It allows the user to see both the real environment and the virtual object on displays like OST-HMDs. Also we can place the virtual object at any depth by adjusting the diopter of the lens on the optical path. The objective is to verify the effectiveness of sharpening image of our research “SharpView” by using this device. Specifically, I performed the programming for the experiment. I focused on the portion of getting the pupil diameter measured from the gaze tracker and the algorithm of the experiment flow. Also, I learned the multiple perspectives and native English that can not be obtained in the Japanese laboratory.

In addition, I could experience the Mississippi culture during this exchange period. There is a lot of nature in Mississippi, the activities such as canoeing or Zoo were exciting. Furthermore, American football is very popular in MSU and we can watch a game on campus stadium every weekend. American football is not famous in Japan, however I felt It is very interesting when I watched it at the stadium.
